After WW1 'Mac' was the most famous man in Australia. He had served the Anzacs on Gallipoli, the Middle East, the Somme, Pozieres and Passchendaele. During this time he led 3,000 to a living faith in Christ as well as burying hundreds of them. 'Enemy shells roared overhead, but ... large numbers of men came to the improvised communion table and knelt to receive the emblems of salvation.' He took part in the charge at Lone Pine, armed with only a shovel. His 'boys' pleaded with him to stay behind. He was wounded, narrowly escaping death. He heard God's audible voice saving his life on six occasions. He was presented with the Military Cross, diggers loved him. Mac was a regular hero to the men.
